This is one of the few genuinely famous overland-by-sea routes in Indonesia, and also one of the most misrepresented. Some listings sell it as a luxury cruise. Others sell it as a party boat. The honest description sits in between: a multi-day passage across three provinces, with real sailing hours, limited connectivity, and scenery that a flight simply does not give you.
What the route actually covers
Boats depart from northern Lombok — usually Teluk Nara or Bangsal near the Gilis — and work east through the Sumbawa coast before entering Komodo National Park. The order of stops varies with wind and swell, but the anchor points are consistent across operators.

It is the longest continuous stretch of open water on the trip, usually run at night while you sleep, and it is the single biggest reason to care what kind of hull you are on. A heavier, longer vessel rides it very differently from a light open-deck boat.

Prices on this route are published openly by several operators, which makes it one of the easier Indonesian trips to price-check. The bands below reflect what is publicly listed for 2026–2027 departures — they are market ranges, not one company's rate card.

Note what that last row shows: the same duration costs roughly a hundred US dollars more starting from Lombok than starting from Labuan Bajo. You are paying for the transfer distance, not for extra park time.
Sailing from Lombok versus flying to Labuan Bajo
This is the decision most travellers are actually making, so here it is without the marketing.

Put plainly: if the sailing is the holiday, take the Lombok route. If Komodo National Park is the holiday, fly and spend your days in the park. Practical points before you commit
Under PP 36/2024 the entrance component is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit and IDR 50,000 (weekday) or IDR 75,000 (weekend and public holiday) for Indonesian visitors, collected on top of the trip.
This crossing sits in genuinely open water; operators cancel or reroute in that window and some boats go into maintenance. April to June and September to November are the calmest.
Almost nobody sails back. Budget for a flight home out of Labuan Bajo's Komodo Airport (LBJ), or plan the reverse Flores to Lombok run.
On mid-range boats there may be only four to six private cabins for the whole departure.

Four days and three nights is the standard format, arriving in Labuan Bajo around midday on day four. Shorter 3D2N versions exist but cut Moyo or Satonda, and the long overnight crossing stays the same length either way.

Do I see Komodo dragons on this trip?
Yes — a ranger-guided trek on Komodo or Rinca island is on every standard 4D3N itinerary, usually on day three. Rangers are compulsory and their fee is normally collected with the park entrance charge.
Is there Wi-Fi or phone signal on board?
Assume none for most of the trip. Signal appears intermittently near Sumbawa's coast and returns properly as you approach Labuan Bajo. Download offline maps and tell people at home you will be uncontactable for three days.
Can I do this trip in reverse, Komodo to Lombok?
Yes. The Flores-to-Lombok direction runs the same anchorages backwards and is often easier to book at short notice because most demand flows west to east. Prices are broadly comparable.
What is the best month to sail Lombok to Komodo?
April to June and September to November give the calmest seas and best visibility. July and August have good visibility but more wind in the open straits, and are peak season for price and crowds.
Is a private charter available on this route?
Yes, though most private charters run from Labuan Bajo rather than Lombok because the positioning voyage adds days. If you want the Lombok departure privately, ask for a repositioning quote — it is quoted per night, not per person.
What should I pack?
Reef-safe sunscreen, a dry bag, motion-sickness tablets, a head torch, cash in rupiah for park fees and tips, and one warm layer for the night crossing. Space is tight; a soft duffel beats a hard suitcase on every boat.
