Almost everyone sails west to east, Lombok to Flores. That imbalance is exactly why the reverse route is worth knowing about. Boats have to reposition anyway, so westbound departures often have space when the eastbound ones are full, and you get the park on day one instead of day three — while you are still fresh and before three nights at anchor have worn the group down.
Why anyone sails west
On the eastbound trip the park is the finale, and by then some of the group have had enough of boats. Westbound you walk Padar and dive the manta channel on day one and two.
Repositioning legs are less-sold. If you are booking two weeks out in high season, the westbound boat is far more likely to have a cabin.
If your trip ends in Bali — and most do — finishing in Lombok puts you a short fast-boat or 25-minute flight from Denpasar rather than a full-fare flight from Labuan Bajo.

The long open-water stretch falls on the night between day two and day three — the same passage as the eastbound trip, taken in the other direction. It is run overnight so you sleep through most of it.

Two costs sit outside those figures. Komodo National Park entry, which under PP No. 36/2024 is IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit (IDR 50,000 weekday or IDR 75,000 weekend and holiday for Indonesian visitors), and your onward transport from Lombok. Neither is large, but both surprise people who budgeted only the boat.

Who this trip suits — and who it does not
Best for independent travellers with four spare days, couples comfortable in close quarters, and anyone who wants the passage as much as the destination. Not for families with small children, anyone prone to seasickness, or travellers whose main goal is Komodo National Park itself — that group gets far more park time from a dedicated Labuan Bajo departure. Frequently asked questions
How long is the Flores to Lombok boat trip?
Four days and three nights is standard, boarding late morning in Labuan Bajo and arriving in northern Lombok early afternoon on day four. A compressed 3D2N version exists but drops either Moyo or Satonda.
Is the reverse route cheaper than Lombok to Flores?
Not usually. Published prices are broadly the same in both directions — IDR 2.5–3.5 million shared, IDR 5–8 million for a cabin. The real advantage of westbound is availability, not price.
Where does the boat drop me in Lombok?
Northern Lombok, typically Teluk Nara or Bangsal harbour near the Gili Islands. From there it is roughly 1.5–2 hours by road to Lombok International Airport, or a short public boat to Gili Trawangan.
Do I still get the full Komodo experience going west?
Yes, and arguably a better one. Standard westbound itineraries include a ranger-guided dragon trek, Pink Beach, the Padar sunrise ridge and the Manta Point drift — all in the first two days, before fatigue sets in.
When is the worst time to sail this route?
December to March. The monsoon brings the roughest seas of the year to the open stretch off Sumbawa, cancellations rise, and some boats haul out for maintenance. It is, however, peak manta season inside the park.
Are meals included?
Yes on every operator we know of — three cooked meals a day plus snacks, drinking water, tea and coffee. Alcohol is normally extra or bring-your-own. Vegetarian and halal requests need 48 hours' notice.
Can I bring luggage for a longer trip?
Bring a soft duffel, not a hard case. Storage is under bunks and in deck lockers. Most operators will hold excess luggage at their Labuan Bajo office and forward it, but confirm that in writing before you rely on it.
Is a private westbound charter possible?
Yes, quoted per night rather than per person, and priced against the repositioning the vessel needs anyway. Ask for a one-way charter quote with your dates — the answer varies sharply by season and by boat.
