Labuan Bajo Town Guide: Batu Cermin, Sylvia Hill & the Harbour Area

Labuan Bajo is a compact harbour town you can cover in a day. The three fixed points are Batu Cermin cave, roughly 15 minutes inland; Sylvia Hill, the sunset viewpoint above the bay; and the harbour front itself, where every boat leaves and where Kampung Ujung night market sets up after dark. Komodo Airport is 10–15 minutes from the pier.

Most people treat Labuan Bajo as a corridor — land, sleep, board a boat. That is a mistake for one practical reason: flights into Komodo Airport are weather-sensitive, so arriving the day before your departure is basic insurance. This page is what to do with that day.

We have deliberately not printed exact entrance prices for the sites above. Local ticketing at Batu Cermin and the viewpoints is set by village and district management and changes without notice; the figures circulating online are frequently a year or two stale. They are small — carry rupiah in small notes and confirm at the gate.

A realistic one-day plan

Morning. Batu Cermin between 10:00 and noon, when sunlight drops through the ceiling shaft and the fossilised coral in the walls actually shows. It is a short walk in, not a caving expedition, but wear shoes with grip.

Midday. Back into town for lunch and, more usefully, to walk the harbour front and find your pier. Knowing exactly where your boat sits saves a stressful twenty minutes the following morning with luggage in the sun.

Afternoon. Buy what you forgot. The town has dive shops, pharmacies, ATMs and enough minimarkets for sunscreen, motion-sickness tablets and cash. Draw rupiah here — there are no ATMs anywhere in the park, and park fees and tips are cash.

Evening. Sylvia Hill or Puncak Waringin for sunset, then Kampung Ujung for grilled fish. Ask the price per kilo before they weigh it; that is normal practice, not rudeness.

What the town is honestly like

Labuan Bajo has changed fast. It is now a designated national tourism priority destination, which has brought resorts, a widened airport and construction along the ridge road. The consequence is a town in transition: excellent coffee and marina-grade hotels alongside dust, roadworks and boat touts. Both are true at once.

What has not changed is that this is the only gateway to Komodo National Park. Every vessel that enters the park — day boat, phinisi, liveaboard, superyacht — clears from this harbour. That is why the town matters far beyond its size, and why the quality of your operator matters more than the quality of your hotel.

Best for — how to use your land day

Arriving the day before a charter. Batu Cermin, harbour recce, cash, early night. This is the version we recommend to every guest.
A weather day when your boat cannot sail. Batu Cermin plus a viewpoint plus the night market fills it without a car hire.
A last day before an evening flight. Boats return between 11:00 and 13:00; that leaves time for lunch, a shower at a day-use room and Puncak Waringin before check-in.
Not worth it: squeezing a land day into a three-night trip. Spend the time on the water instead.

Is Labuan Bajo worth a day on land?

One day, yes — mainly as insurance against a delayed flight before your boat departs. Batu Cermin cave, a sunset viewpoint and the Kampung Ujung fish market fill it comfortably. More than a day and you are better off on the water.

What is Batu Cermin cave?

Where is the best sunset spot in Labuan Bajo?

About 10 to 15 minutes by car to the harbour. Most operators include the transfer with a charter booking; taxis and ojek motorbike taxis are readily available at the terminal.

Are there ATMs in Labuan Bajo?

Yes, several in town, and this is your last chance. There are no ATMs in Komodo National Park, and park entry fees, ranger charges, market meals and crew tips are all cash. Draw more rupiah than you think you need.

Where do locals eat in Labuan Bajo?

Kampung Ujung night market on the harbour front, from around 18:00. You choose your fish from the ice, it is weighed, grilled and served with rice and sambal. Confirm the per-kilo price before weighing.

Do I need to book a hotel the night before my boat?

We strongly recommend it. Boats board between 09:00 and 10:30, and flights into Labuan Bajo are weather-sensitive, especially from December to March. A hotel night costs far less than a missed departure.

Can I do a day trip to Komodo instead of staying overnight on a boat?

Yes, single-day trips run from the harbour, typically 06:30 to 17:00. They reach fewer sites and skip the Padar sunrise entirely, which is the shot most people came for. A 2D1N is a much better use of the same effort.
