Labuan Bajo to Sumba, Bima & Beyond: Onward Boat Connections
Labuan Bajo is a terminus, not a hub. There is no scheduled fast boat to Sumba or Alor. Realistic onward options are three: the ASDP car ferry west to Sape on Sumbawa, roughly 6–9 hours, then road to Bima; PELNI national-line ships on rotating multi-week circuits; or a private charter, quoted per night. Everything else is a flight.
This page exists because a lot of itineraries assume Labuan Bajo connects onward the way Bali does. It does not. Understanding that early saves people from booking a Sumba hotel they cannot reach. Below is what actually runs, what runs only on paper, and where chartering makes more sense than scheduled transport.
What actually connects to Labuan Bajo by sea
| Destination | Realistic mode | Approx. duration | Frequency | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sape (Sumbawa) → Bima | ASDP car ferry, then 1.5–2 h by road | ~6–9 h at sea | Typically one departure most days, often early morning | Weather-dependent; suspended in heavy seas |
| Lombok | 4D3N sailing trip, or ferry chain via Sape and Poto Tano | 4 days sailing, or ~2 days overland-and-ferry | Weekly sailings; daily ferries | Sailings suspend Dec–Mar |
| Sumba | No scheduled fast boat. Fly via Denpasar to Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP), or PELNI when the circuit calls | Flight ~2–4 h with connection | Daily flights via Bali; PELNI on a multi-week cycle | Flights reliable; PELNI needs date-by-date checking |
| Ende, Maumere, east Flores | Overland by road across Flores | ~10–12 h to Ende, longer to Maumere | Daily buses and private cars | Reliable; mountainous and slow |
| Alor, Banda Sea, Raja Ampat | Expedition charter only | Multi-day passages, seasonal windows | On request | No scheduled service exists |
| Java, Sulawesi, Papua | PELNI national line, or fly | Days at sea | Rotating multi-week circuits | Cheap, slow, schedule rotates |
Two honest caveats. ASDP and PELNI both publish their own schedules and both change them; nothing above should be treated as a timetable, only as an order of magnitude. And the Sape crossing is the one everyone underestimates — it is open water, it is long, and it is the first thing cancelled when the wind gets up.
When a charter beats scheduled transport
For three destination types, hiring a boat is not a luxury upgrade — it is the only mechanism that exists.
- Anywhere in Komodo National Park itself. There is no public transport inside the park. Every island landing is a chartered or shared vessel with a tender.
- Long-range expedition routes. The Banda Sea crossing and the Komodo-to-Raja Ampat passage have seasonal windows and no scheduled equivalent. These are multi-day charters with a fixed sailing plan.
- One-way repositioning legs. If a vessel needs to move between cruising grounds anyway, a one-way charter can be quoted well below a return. Ask; do not assume.
| Vessel | 2D1N | 3D2N | 4D3N | Max guests | Cabins |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lamborajo I | from USD 3,400 | from USD 3,700 | from USD 4,100 | 24 | 6, shared bathrooms |
| Lamborajo II | from USD 5,800 | from USD 6,550 | from USD 7,600 | 25 | 8, en-suite |
| Lamborajo III | from USD 7,900 | from USD 8,650 | from USD 9,650 | 22 | 8, en-suite |
Those “from” figures are the 1–12 guest tier. Longer one-way passages beyond the standard park routes are quoted individually, because fuel, crew days and repositioning dominate the cost rather than the nightly rate. Full tier detail is on the prices and booking page, and the vessel specifications are on the fleet page.
Best for — matching the route to the traveller
- Overlanders with a vehicle: the Sape ferry, then road across Sumbawa. The only way to move a car or motorbike off Flores.
- Backpackers heading west: the 4-day sailing to Lombok. Cheaper than flying once you count what you see on the way.
- Travellers bound for Sumba or Alor: fly, almost always via Denpasar. Do not plan a sea crossing you cannot confirm.
- Groups with time and budget: a private charter on a one-way leg, which turns a transfer into the holiday.
If you are heading west instead, the Flores to Lombok reverse route covers it in detail, and how to get to Labuan Bajo covers the same connections inbound. Lamborajo is operated and marketed by Komodo Luxury, a Labuan Bajo-based operator running since 2015 and part of Juara Holding Group.
