How to Get to Labuan Bajo in 2027: Flights, Ferry & Real Travel Times
There is no direct passenger ferry from Bali to Labuan Bajo. You have three real options: fly — 1 to 1.5 hours from Denpasar, 2 to 2.5 hours from Jakarta; take the overland island-hop by road and three ASDP ferries, roughly two to three days; or sail the 4-day backpacker route from Lombok. Flying costs from about IDR 600,000 one way.
This page exists because the phrase “Bali to Labuan Bajo ferry” gets typed thousands of times a month and almost nobody answers it straight. The honest answer is that no single vessel makes that run on a scheduled passenger service. What exists instead is a chain of ferries, a national shipping line whose schedule rotates, and a lot of flights.
Option 1: Fly — what almost everyone does
Komodo Airport (IATA code LBJ) sits about 10 to 15 minutes by car from Labuan Bajo harbour, which is unusually convenient for a gateway airport. Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and the Lion Air group all serve it, with frequencies that change seasonally.
| From | Non-stop flight time | Promo fare (IDR, one way) | Typical fare (IDR, one way) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Denpasar, Bali (DPS) | 1 – 1.5 hours | 600,000 – 900,000 | 900,000 – 1,500,000 | Most frequent route; several daily departures in high season |
| Jakarta (CGK) | 2 – 2.5 hours | 900,000 – 1,400,000 | 1,400,000 – 2,200,000 | Fewer non-stops; many itineraries route via Denpasar |
| Surabaya (SUB), Lombok (LOP), Kupang (KOE) | Connecting, usually via DPS | Varies | Varies | Schedules rotate seasonally — check on the day you book |
Fare bands are indicative, not quotes. They move with season, day of week and how far ahead you book. The one reliable rule: the last flight of the day into LBJ is the one that gets cancelled or delayed when weather closes in, so if your boat leaves the next morning, fly in the morning before.
Option 2: Overland and ferry — the real “Bali to Labuan Bajo by sea”
You can get from Bali to Flores entirely by road and ferry. It takes two to three days with overnight stops and involves three separate ASDP crossings. People do it with motorbikes, with cars, and occasionally on a dare.
| Leg | Mode | Approx. duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Padangbai (Bali) → Lembar (Lombok) | ASDP car ferry | ~4 – 5 hours | Frequent departures around the clock; crossings suspend in heavy weather |
| Lembar → Kayangan (east Lombok) | Road | ~3 – 4 hours | Cross-island drive |
| Kayangan (Lombok) → Poto Tano (Sumbawa) | ASDP car ferry | ~1.5 – 2 hours | Regular daily service |
| Poto Tano → Sape (east Sumbawa) | Road | ~8 – 10 hours | The long haul; most people break this overnight in Bima |
| Sape (Sumbawa) → Labuan Bajo (Flores) | ASDP car ferry | ~6 – 9 hours | Typically one departure a day, often early morning; suspended in rough seas |
Add it up and you are looking at roughly 25 to 30 hours of moving time spread across two or three days, plus waiting. It is cheap, it is a genuine adventure, and it is a poor idea if you have a boat booked on a fixed date. The Sape crossing in particular is weather-dependent and does not run to a schedule you can rely on months ahead.
The national shipping line PELNI also calls at Labuan Bajo on rotating multi-week circuits linking Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara and beyond. Those sailings are real and cheap, but the route pattern repeats on a two-week cycle rather than daily, so treat PELNI as something to check for your exact dates rather than plan around.
Option 3: Sail it — 4 days from Lombok
The third way is to make the journey the holiday: fly or ferry to Lombok, then take the 4-day, 3-night sailing east through Kenawa, Moyo and Satonda into Komodo National Park, finishing in Labuan Bajo. Shared berths start around IDR 2,500,000 per person. Full detail is on our Lombok to Komodo boat trip page.
Getting from the airport to the harbour
| Mode | Journey time | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hotel or operator transfer | 10 – 15 min | Often complimentary with a charter | Ask when you book; most Labuan Bajo operators include it |
| Airport taxi | 10 – 15 min | Fixed local rate, agreed at the counter | Agree the fare before you get in |
| Ojek (motorbike taxi) | ~10 min | Cheapest option | Fine with a daypack, impractical with a suitcase |
Which option is best for you?
- Fixed holiday dates, boat already booked — fly. Arrive a day early. The margin is worth more than the hotel night costs.
- Overlanding with your own vehicle — the ferry chain. It is the only way to bring a car or motorbike to Flores.
- Time-rich, itinerary-flexible — sail from Lombok. You see three islands nobody flying will ever see.
- Arriving to charter a boat — fly, and land before dark. Charters leave in the morning; a late arrival costs you a day on the water.
Once you land, the harbour is where everything starts. See 3D2N departure times and what is included for boarding times, onward boat connections if Flores is not your last stop, and labuanbajoluxury.com for stays and charters around the town itself. Everything else is in the Lamborajo FAQ hub.
