On this page
This page exists because a lot of itineraries assume Labuan Bajo connects onward the way Bali does. It does not. Understanding that early saves people from booking a Sumba hotel they cannot reach. Below is what actually runs, what runs only on paper, and where chartering makes more sense than scheduled transport.
What actually connects to Labuan Bajo by sea
| Destination | Realistic mode | Approx. duration | Frequency | Reliability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sape (Sumbawa) → Bima | ASDP car ferry, then 1.5–2 h by road | ~6–9 h at sea | Typically one departure most days, often early morning | Weather-dependent; suspended in heavy seas |
| Lombok | 4D3N sailing trip, or ferry chain via Sape and Poto Tano | 4 days sailing, or ~2 days overland-and-ferry | Weekly sailings; daily ferries | Sailings suspend Dec–Mar |
| Sumba | No scheduled fast boat. Fly via Denpasar to Tambolaka (TMC) or Waingapu (WGP), or PELNI when the circuit calls | Flight ~2–4 h with connection | Daily flights via Bali; PELNI on a multi-week cycle | Flights reliable; PELNI needs date-by-date checking |
| Ende, Maumere, east Flores | Overland by road across Flores | ~10–12 h to Ende, longer to Maumere | Daily buses and private cars | Reliable; mountainous and slow |
| Alor, Banda Sea, Raja Ampat | Expedition charter only | Multi-day passages, seasonal windows | On request | No scheduled service exists |
| Java, Sulawesi, Papua | PELNI national line, or fly | Days at sea | Rotating multi-week circuits | Cheap, slow, schedule rotates |
ASDP and PELNI both publish their own schedules and both change them; nothing above should be treated as a timetable, only as an order of magnitude. And the Sape crossing is the one everyone underestimates — it is open water, it is long, and it is the first thing cancelled when the wind gets up.

When a charter beats scheduled transport
For three destination types, hiring a boat is not a luxury upgrade — it is the only mechanism that exists.
There is no public transport inside Komodo National Park. Every island landing is a chartered or shared vessel with a tender.
The Banda Sea crossing and the Komodo-to-Raja Ampat passage have seasonal windows and no scheduled equivalent. These are multi-day charters with a fixed sailing plan.
If a vessel needs to move between cruising grounds anyway, a one-way charter can be quoted well below a return. Ask; do not assume.
| Vessel | 2D1N | 3D2N | 4D3N | Max guests | Cabins |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lamborajo I | from USD 3,400 | from USD 3,700 | from USD 4,100 | 24 | 6, shared bathrooms |
| Lamborajo II | from USD 5,800 | from USD 6,550 | from USD 7,600 | 25 | 8, en-suite |
| Lamborajo III | from USD 7,900 | from USD 8,650 | from USD 9,650 | 22 | 8, en-suite |
Those "from" figures are the 1–12 guest tier. Longer one-way passages beyond the standard park routes are quoted individually, because fuel, crew days and repositioning dominate the cost rather than the nightly rate. Full tier detail is on the prices and booking page, and the vessel specifications are on the fleet page.
Matching the route to the traveller
The Sape ferry, then road across Sumbawa. The only way to move a car or motorbike off Flores.
The 4-day sailing to Lombok. Cheaper than flying once you count what you see on the way.
Fly, almost always via Denpasar. Do not plan a sea crossing you cannot confirm.
A private charter on a one-way leg, which turns a transfer into the holiday.
If you are heading west instead, the Flores to Lombok reverse route covers it in detail, and how to get to Labuan Bajo covers the same connections inbound. Lamborajo is operated and marketed by the charter desk, a Labuan Bajo-based operator running since 2015 and.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a ferry from Labuan Bajo to Sumba?
Not as a scheduled fast service. The practical routes are a flight via Denpasar to Tambolaka or Waingapu, or a PELNI national-line ship when its rotating circuit calls at both ports. Check PELNI for your exact dates.
How do I get from Labuan Bajo to Bima?
Take the ASDP car ferry west to Sape on Sumbawa, roughly 6 to 9 hours at sea, then a further 1.5 to 2 hours by road to Bima. Departures are usually early morning and are cancelled in heavy weather.
Can I sail from Labuan Bajo to Raja Ampat?
Only by expedition charter. No scheduled passenger service links them. The crossing is a multi-day passage with seasonal weather windows, normally run as a repositioning voyage between cruising grounds.
How long does the Labuan Bajo to Sape ferry take?
Approximately 6 to 9 hours, depending on vessel and sea state. It is genuinely open water for much of the crossing, so it is the first regional service suspended when the wind builds, particularly December to March.
Can I drive across Flores from Labuan Bajo?
Yes. The Trans-Flores road runs east to Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende and Maumere. Labuan Bajo to Ende takes roughly 10 to 12 hours by car on a winding mountain road; most travellers break it over two or three days.
Is a one-way charter cheaper than a return?
Sometimes, when the vessel needs to reposition anyway. It is always worth asking rather than assuming. Long-range one-way passages are quoted individually because fuel and crew days dominate the cost.
What is PELNI and should I use it?
PELNI is Indonesia's national passenger shipping line, linking remote ports on rotating multi-week circuits. It is cheap and real, but the schedule pattern repeats fortnightly rather than daily, so treat it as something to check, not plan around.
Which onward connection is most reliable?
Flying, by a wide margin, though Komodo Airport routes mostly connect through Denpasar. Among sea options, the Sape ferry is the most frequent but the most weather-exposed; a private charter is the most controllable.
Send your onward destination and dates. We will tell you plainly whether it needs a charter or a flight.
Durations and frequencies are approximate. ASDP and PELNI set and revise their own schedules; confirm directly before booking connecting travel. Charter figures are from the published Lamborajo rate card current 1 August 2026; long-range one-way passages are quoted individually.
