Gili Trawangan to Komodo by Boat: Options, Times & Costs
There is no direct scheduled public boat from Gili Trawangan to Komodo. You have three real options: cross to Bangsal on northern Lombok (about 30–40 minutes by local boat) and join a multi-day boat east; go back through Lombok airport and fly to Labuan Bajo; or route via Bali. The multi-day sea route takes four days; the flight routes take under a day.
Gili Trawangan sits tantalisingly close to the start of the classic Lombok–Komodo sea route — the multi-day boats leave from Teluk Nara and Bangsal, the same stretch of coast your Gili boat lands on. That accident of geography is why the island is one of the best places in Indonesia to start a Komodo trip, provided you pick the right one of the three routes below.
The three routes, compared
| Route | Time to Komodo | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Multi-day boat from Bangsal / Teluk Nara | 4 days, 3 nights at sea — Komodo is the destination and the journey | Travellers with time; anyone who wants Kenawa, Moyo and Satonda en route | Open-water crossing on day three; limited signal for most of the trip |
| 2. Boat to Bangsal → drive to Lombok airport → fly to Labuan Bajo | Same day with the right connections | Anyone short on time who still wants a proper Komodo boat trip from Labuan Bajo | Airport is 1.5–2 h by road from Bangsal; flight schedules thin out by afternoon |
| 3. Fast boat to Bali → fly Denpasar–Labuan Bajo | Same day or overnight in Bali | Travellers already ending their Gili stay westward; more flight frequency than Lombok | The long way round on a map; fast-boat and flight schedules must actually meet |
Route 1: the sea route, in full
Local and fast boats run the Gili Trawangan–Bangsal hop in roughly 30–40 minutes. From Bangsal or neighbouring Teluk Nara, the multi-day boats work east along the Sumbawa coast: Kenawa’s grass hill, Moyo’s waterfall pools, Satonda’s crater lake, then the long overnight crossing into Komodo National Park for Padar, Pink Beach, the dragons and the manta channel, finishing in Labuan Bajo around midday on day four. The full stop-by-stop breakdown, market price bands and honest sea-state warnings are on the Lombok to Komodo route guide; the same passage also runs in reverse if you would rather fly in and sail back.
Route 2: same-day via Lombok airport
Cross to Bangsal early, drive the 1.5–2 hours to Lombok International Airport, and fly to Labuan Bajo. Then board a Komodo boat properly rested the next morning — Lamborajo departures leave the harbour between 09:30 and 10:30 with hotel pick-up from 08:00. Flight frequency on this leg is thinner than from Bali, so check schedules before committing; the getting to Labuan Bajo guide covers every approach with real travel times.
Route 3: via Bali
Counter-intuitive but often smoothest: fast boat west to Bali, then the short Denpasar–Labuan Bajo flight, which runs far more frequently than the Lombok leg. If your Gili stay was the middle of a Bali-based itinerary anyway, this is usually the least fragile chain of connections — and an overnight in Bali de-risks the whole thing.
Which route should you take?
- You have four spare days and a taste for passage-making: Route 1. The crossing is the trip.
- You have 3–5 days total for Komodo: Route 2 or 3, then a 3D2N from Labuan Bajo — more time inside the park, none spent in transit at sea.
- You are a group of 12–25: fly, then charter. The per-head arithmetic on a whole-boat charter from Labuan Bajo beats assembling that many seats on a crossing boat, and the group keeps its own schedule. The wider charter market above this fleet runs through the Komodo boat charter fleet.
