How Far in Advance Should a Group of 20 Book a Komodo Boat for 2027?

For a group of twenty, book a Komodo charter four to six months ahead for peak-season dates — June through September, Christmas and New Year — and two to three months ahead for shoulder season. The boat is rarely the binding constraint; twenty airline seats into Labuan Bajo on the same flight is, and that is the queue you are really joining.

Why groups need more runway than couples
A couple can take any of a dozen cabins on any of a hundred departures. A group of twenty needs an entire vessel free on a specific date — and on a three-boat fleet like ours, a single confirmed charter removes a whole hull from the calendar for those days. Availability for large groups is therefore binary: the boat is yours or it is gone. That is the structural reason every guide about group trips repeats the same advice — decide early, deposit early. How the calendar actually fills, month by month, is laid out on the Lamborajo sailing schedule for 2027.
The 2027 dates that will go first
- June–September. The dry-season core: calm seas, 25-metre-plus visibility, and every boat in the harbour working at capacity. For these months, six months of lead time is not excessive for a twenty-person charter.
- The early-March cluster. In 2027 Nyepi falls on 9 March with the projected Idul Fitri holidays and joint-leave days landing immediately after, around 8–12 March. That collision produces the single biggest domestic travel week of the year. Indonesian corporate and family groups book this window earliest of all.
- Christmas and New Year. A short, intense surge in an otherwise quiet wet-season month. Boats sell out despite the weather, not because of it.
- 17 August. Independence Day 2027 falls on a Tuesday, making a natural four-day weekend — a classic office-trip window that fills fast.
For everything else — late March through May, October, November — the calendar breathes. Two to three months is normally enough, and quiet-season dates sometimes clear with weeks to spare. Cross-check your candidate dates against sea conditions on the month-by-month sea and crowd table before you commit; a cheap January date that the harbour master closes is not cheap.
The flight problem nobody prices in
Jakarta–Labuan Bajo runs roughly three to six direct flights a day; Surabaya sends one or two. Twenty seats on one departure evaporate quickly in peak months, and group fares stop being offered once a flight is half full. Practical sequence: hold the boat first — a boat holds for days, an airfare holds for hours — then buy flights within the week, splitting the group across two departures if a single flight cannot seat everyone. Arrivals into Labuan Bajo start around 09:00–10:00 from Jakarta, which pairs cleanly with a same-day afternoon boarding.
The booking sequence that works
- Fix the headcount honestly. The rate tiers step at 12, 16 and 20 guests; a maybe-crowd of 23 books differently from a firm 19.
- Request the date hold. The desk confirms availability and deposit terms in writing — the process is described step by step in how to book Lamborajo.
- Pay the deposit, then buy flights. In that order, always.
- Reconfirm at 30 days. Final manifest, dietary notes, park-fee cash (IDR 250,000 regulated entrance per foreign visitor), and the pickup schedule.
How lead time changes what you pay
Charter rates on a published card do not creep upward as the date approaches the way airfares do — the card is the card. What changes is which boats are left. Book a peak-season week nine months out and every hull and every cabin layout is available; ask eight weeks out and you are choosing from what the slower groups rejected, often at a less convenient departure day that ripples into your flight costs. For large groups, early booking is not about discounts. It is about buying choice while choice still exists.
Quick answers
Can a group of 20 find a boat last-minute in low season?
Sometimes, yes — November or February dates occasionally clear two or three weeks out. But last-minute in the wet season means accepting the weather clause with no margin: if the harbour master holds departures the day you sail, a group with no calendar flexibility loses the trip, not just the slot.
Does the deposit lock the price?
Yes — a written confirmation against the published card fixes the charter figure for your date and tier. Surcharges only enter the picture on the handful of super-peak dates flagged at confirmation time, never retroactively.
When should we book for early March 2027?
Treat the Nyepi–Lebaran cluster around 8–12 March 2027 like Christmas: have the boat held and deposited by October 2026, and buy the twenty flight seats the same week.
Groups larger than our fleet’s capacity, or those wanting several boats sailing in convoy, can compare hulls across the wider Komodo Luxury fleet. Otherwise, message the reservations desk on WhatsApp with your target week and headcount — in 2027, the groups that sail on the dates they wanted are the ones that asked in 2026.
