Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo is served by Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and the wider Lion Air group, with non-stop routes from Denpasar (about 1 to 1.5 hours) and Jakarta (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Frequencies change seasonally, and there are no international arrivals — every foreign visitor connects through Bali or Jakarta.

Labuan Bajo is a domestic-only airport at the western tip of Flores, ten to fifteen minutes by road from the harbour where boats depart. That short transfer is the good news. The constraint is upstream: the number of carriers is small, the aircraft are narrow-body, and seat supply tightens hard in July, August and around New Year.

Route authorities and frequencies on Indonesian domestic sectors are revised several times a year, carriers add and drop the Jakarta non-stop seasonally, and an airline that flew twice daily last dry season may fly once daily this one. Fare bands, honestly

These are observed bands rather than published fares, and they move constantly. Two structural points are more durable than any number. First, the Bali sector is the one with real competition, which is why it is cheaper per hour than Jakarta. Second, mid-week departures in April to June and September to November consistently sit at the bottom of the band, and those are also the calmest months at sea — the cheap flight and the good weather coincide, which is unusual. Can you fly to Labuan Bajo from outside Indonesia?

Not directly. Komodo Airport handles domestic traffic; there are no scheduled international services. In practice every international itinerary routes through Bali (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK), and Bali is the overwhelmingly common choice because the sector is short, frequent and competitive.

If you are connecting from an international arrival, do not book the same-day onward flight tight. A missed connection in Denpasar means the next Labuan Bajo service, which may be the following morning — and if a boat is departing that morning, the domino falls onto the boat. Overnight in Bali or Jakarta if your international arrival is after mid-afternoon.

What about getting there without flying?

There is no scheduled passenger ferry from Bali to Labuan Bajo. Anyone who tells you otherwise is describing either the multi-leg overland chain — Bali to Lombok, Lombok to Sumbawa, Sumbawa to Flores, three separate crossings plus long road sections — or a PELNI vessel on a circuit that touches Labuan Bajo roughly fortnightly on an itinerary designed for cargo and inter-island passengers rather than tourists.

Practicalities at Komodo Airport

LBJ is a small, single-terminal airport with a modest domestic hall. Expect a short walk from aircraft to terminal, a single baggage belt, and a compact arrivals area where drivers wait. There is no airline lounge network of any scale, limited food and drink, and no ATM density comparable to town — draw cash in Labuan Bajo rather than relying on the airport.

Baggage rules are the one thing worth checking carefully, because they differ sharply between carriers. Full-service tickets on Garuda and Batik generally include a checked allowance; low-cost fares on Citilink and within the Lion group frequently do not, and buying allowance at the airport is the most expensive way to do it. If you are carrying dive gear, declare and pre-purchase the weight.

For the boat itself, cabin baggage only is a real advantage on arrival day: it removes fifteen to thirty minutes of exposure between landing and the pier, which is the exact margin that decides whether a same-morning boarding works.

Booking order that avoids trouble

Book the boat first, then the flights around it. Boats have far less capacity than aircraft on this route — a vessel carries twenty to twenty-five guests and a departure date either exists or does not, while there are usually several flights a day.
