Komodo or Bali for a Week in Indonesia?

With one week in Indonesia, do both: three or four nights in Bali either side of a 3D2N Komodo sailing. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is a one to one-and-a-half-hour flight with several services a day, so the transfer costs you half a day each way. Choosing only Bali means missing the country’s best marine park; choosing only Komodo leaves three days unused.

The question is posed as either-or far more often than it needs to be. Bali and Komodo are not competing destinations in the way that, say, Bali and Lombok are. The routes and travel times between them are set out on our how to get to Labuan Bajo page. They are a city-break-and-wilderness pairing that happens to be an hour apart by air, and a week is enough for both if you structure it properly.

Komodo or Bali for a week in Indonesia?

Three ways to spend seven nights

Bali only7 nights, two or three basesFirst visit to Indonesia, families with small children, surfing, low budgetYou will hear about Komodo from everyone you meet
Komodo only4 nights Labuan Bajo + 4D3N at sea, plus a land dayDivers, photographers, repeat visitorsThree days unused; you still transit Bali anyway

For most people the third row wins. Two nights in Bali at the start absorb jet lag and give you a buffer if a long-haul flight is delayed, the Komodo leg happens while you are adjusted and energetic, and one night back in Bali at the end covers the return connection without a same-day domestic-to-international transfer.

A worked seven-night itinerary

Seven nights, Bali and Komodo, with realistic timings
DayWhereWhat happens
1BaliInternational arrival; stay south, near the airport. Recover.
2BaliOne full day: beach, Ubud, or whatever your Bali is.
3Bali → Labuan BajoMorning or midday flight, ~1–1.5 h. Afternoon in town, sunset from Sylvia Hill, early night.
4At seaBoard 09:30–10:30. Kelor, Manjarite, anchor at Kalong for the bat exodus.
5At seaPadar at sunrise, Pink Beach, dragon trek, Taka Makassar, the manta channel.
6At sea → Labuan BajoMorning snorkel at Siaba or Kanawa; pier 11:00–13:00; afternoon flight to Bali.
7BaliLast day; fly home that evening or the following morning.

The one rule that makes or breaks this plan: do not fly into Labuan Bajo on the morning you sail. Boats leave between 09:30 and 10:30 and no scheduled departure waits for a delayed flight. The reasoning is set out in full in can I do Komodo in two days on a morning flight.

What each place is genuinely good at

Bali is infrastructure. Hotels at every price point, food from warung to fine dining, drivers, spas, surf schools, an international airport, and a hundred things to do if it rains. It is easy in a way that matters if you are travelling with children or on a first trip to Asia. What it is not is remote — the south is dense and busy, and the diving, while decent, is not in the same league as Komodo.

Komodo is landscape and water. Dry savannah islands, an almost empty sea, coral in genuinely good condition, mantas on a reliable drift, and the largest lizard on earth. It is also a national park where you sleep on a boat, which means no shops, patchy signal and a 04:30 alarm for the best view of the trip. It is more effort and it is the part people remember.

The cost difference

Adding Komodo to a Bali week — incremental cost per person
Line itemCost
Return flight Denpasar ↔ Labuan Bajo~IDR 1,200,000–3,000,000
Boat, 3D2N, group charter at 20 guests (Lamborajo I)USD 4,000 ÷ 20 = ~USD 200
Komodo National Park entrance, foreign visitorIDR 250,000 (PP No. 36/2024)
Ranger and local retributionVariable — ask for it itemised
One hotel night in Labuan Bajo before boardingIDR 250,000–1,500,000 typical
Bali nights saved (3 nights not spent there)Credit against the above

Because you are not paying for Bali accommodation on the nights you are at sea, the true incremental cost of adding Komodo is smaller than the headline. On a filled charter it can land close to what three mid-range Bali nights plus a couple of day tours would have cost anyway. The complete cost stack is broken down in our 3D2N budget guide, and the published charter card sits on our prices and booking page.

When to choose Bali only

Three honest cases. If you are travelling with children under about five, a boat with a 04:30 start and no medical facilities nearby is a hard sell. If your week falls in January or February, the west monsoon raises the chance of a cancelled or uncomfortable sailing, and Bali handles rain better. And if your budget is tight enough that the internal flights are painful, Bali on its own remains a genuinely good week.

When to choose Komodo only

If you dive, and particularly if you dive well. A week built around 4D3N or longer at sea, with a couple of land days in western Flores, gives you the strong-current sites and the southern upwelling zone that a three-day taster cannot reach. Divers who spend that week in Bali instead usually regret it.

Komodo or Bali for a week in Indonesia?
Do both. Two or three nights in Bali, a one-hour flight to Labuan Bajo, a 3D2N sailing, then back to Bali for the departure. The transfer costs roughly half a day each way and the two destinations are completely different experiences.
How long is the flight from Bali to Komodo?
About one hour to one and a half hours non-stop from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo, with several services daily on Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink and the Lion group. Komodo Airport is ten to fifteen minutes from the harbour.
Can I do a Komodo day trip from Bali?
Not sensibly. Flights, transfers and a boat day cannot be compressed into one day, and any product advertised that way is really a two-day trip with a night in Labuan Bajo. Give Komodo three days at minimum.
Is Komodo more expensive than Bali?
Per day, yes, because a boat carries its own crew, fuel, water and food. Per trip, the gap narrows: you are not paying for Bali hotels on the nights you are at sea, and a filled group charter can work out near USD 200 per person for three days.
Which should I do first, Bali or Komodo?
Bali first. Two nights absorb jet lag and protect against a delayed long-haul arrival, so you reach Padar’s 04:30 start rested. Ending in Bali also avoids a same-day domestic-to-international connection on departure.
What is the best month to combine Bali and Komodo?
April to June and September to November. The sea in Komodo is calmest, visibility is best, airfares sit at the lower end of the band and Bali is outside its busiest weeks. July and August work but cost more and are windier at sea.
