Lombok or Labuan Bajo: Which Base Is Better for a Komodo Trip?

Labuan Bajo, without much argument. It sits on the edge of Komodo National Park, so boats reach the first stop in about an hour. Lombok is a genuine departure point too, but by sea it is a four-day, three-night crossing, and by air it means connecting through Bali. Choose Lombok only if the voyage itself is the holiday.

People end up comparing these two because both appear in search results for “Komodo boat trip”, and the products are not remotely the same thing. One is a short hop to a national park. The other is a multi-day passage across two straits that happens to finish inside it. Confusing them is how travellers end up with four days at sea when they wanted three days in the park, or vice versa.

Lombok or Labuan Bajo: which base is better for a Komodo trip?

Notice the fourth row. On a Lombok departure, most of your time is spent crossing Sumbawa’s north coast — genuinely lovely water, with a volcanic crater lake at Satonda and a snorkel at Moyo — but Padar, Pink Beach, the dragons and the manta channel are all compressed into the last stretch. The case for Labuan Bajo

Proximity is the whole argument, and it is a strong one. From the harbour, Kelor is about an hour out. Overnight the boat repositions to Padar, so you are on the ridge at sunrise. Everything the park is famous for fits into three days, and a fourth day buys depth rather than transit.

It also means the round trip closes: you fly in and out of the same airport, which simplifies flights, keeps your luggage in one place and lets you leave things at a hotel. And if weather closes a stop, there is slack to rearrange, because you are not on a schedule that has to reach a distant port by a fixed day.

For divers this is decisive. Komodo’s serious sites — Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, Shotgun — need conditions to line up, and a base at the park’s edge means you can go back tomorrow. A one-way crossing gives you one shot.

The case for Lombok

There is a real one. If you are already in Lombok or the Gilis and do not want to backtrack to Bali for a flight, sailing east is an elegant way to move. If the appeal to you is the passage itself — days of open water, sleeping on deck, islands that see almost no visitors — then the crossing is the product, and the park at the end is the bonus rather than the point.

It also solves one-way routing neatly. Sail Lombok to Labuan Bajo, spend a couple of days in Flores, fly home from LBJ. No retracing. The reverse direction, Flores to Lombok, is often easier to book at short notice and is covered on our reverse route page.

What you should not do is book the crossing believing it is a Komodo tour with a scenic start. Read the itinerary and count how many hours are inside the park boundary.

Time and money, side by side

The last row is the honest “best of both” option, and it needs a ten-day trip. Anyone with a week should base in Labuan Bajo.

Comfort: the part nobody mentions

Crossing boats and park boats are often the same class of vessel doing very different work. Inside the park, the boat anchors every night in a sheltered bay and moves in short daylight legs with one exposed overnight stretch. On a Lombok crossing there are longer open-water passages between islands where there is nothing to do but be on a moving boat.

If anyone in your group is a poor sailor, that difference matters more than any itinerary detail. It is the single most common source of regret we hear about the crossing, and it is entirely predictable in advance.
