What’s a Realistic Total Budget for 3 Days 2 Nights in Komodo, Including Flights and Park Fees?

Budget roughly USD 450 to USD 700 per person for a comfortable 3D2N Komodo trip in 2027 if you are travelling in a group of about twenty. That covers return flights from Bali, your berth on a chartered boat, the IDR 250,000 national park entrance, two nights of food at sea and airport transfers.

The question comes up in almost every enquiry we get, and most published answers dodge it — they quote a boat price and stop there. The boat is usually the smallest surprise. What catches people out is the layer of fees underneath it: park entry, ranger and trail charges collected on the island, one hotel night before boarding, and the flight itself, which swings by a factor of two between a February Tuesday and a July Saturday.

What’s a realistic total budget for 3 days 2 nights in Komodo, including flights and park fees?

Two things about that table deserve emphasis. First, the middle column is not a marketing price — it is arithmetic on a published rate. Lamborajo I costs USD 4,000 for the whole boat, 3D2N, in the 17–20 guest tier. Divide by twenty and you get USD 200 a head for three days at sea with crew, three cooked meals a day, snorkelling gear and tender transfers. That is genuinely less than the USD 271.57 per seat that at least one competitor publishes for a shared boat carrying 32 to 35 passengers.

Second, the flight is the most volatile line. It is also the only one you can move. Fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday in April, May, September or October and the Bali route regularly sits in the IDR 600,000–900,000 promotional band each way. Fly out on the Friday of a long weekend in July and you can pay triple that for the identical seat.

Where the money actually goes on a charter

On a whole-boat charter the price does not scale with headcount the way people expect. The boat costs what it costs. Twelve guests and twenty guests pay almost the same absolute figure — USD 3,700 versus USD 4,000 on Lamborajo I for 3D2N — so the per-person cost falls sharply as the group grows.

The break-even against a per-seat open trip lands somewhere around ten to twelve people. Below that, buying individual berths on a scheduled departure is cheaper. Above it, chartering the whole vessel gives you a better boat, your own timings and a lower cost per head at the same time. The full logic is laid out on our open trip versus private charter page.

The fees people forget

Park entry. IDR 250,000 per foreign visitor per visit, flat, under PP No. 36/2024. Indonesian visitors pay IDR 50,000 on weekdays and IDR 75,000 on weekends and public holidays. Trekking, wildlife observation and snorkelling inside the park are covered by that figure.

The IDR 600,000–900,000 figure you have seen elsewhere. That is not the entrance fee. It is a bundled payment: the statutory entrance component plus regional retribution plus ranger and trail service charges, sometimes plus a per-boat anchorage element. It may well be what you end up paying in total — but you are entitled to see it itemised, and any operator who cannot itemise it is a warning sign.

The abandoned membership fee. The IDR 3,750,000 “conservation membership” proposed in 2022 was cancelled and never came into force. Any 2027 quote that includes it is wrong.

Diving. Never part of a standard boat rate. Tanks, weights and a divemaster are quoted per dive and must be arranged before departure.

Three ways to cut the total without cutting the trip

Fill the boat. The single largest saving available is bringing more people. Going from twelve to twenty guests on Lamborajo I drops the per-person boat cost from USD 308 to USD 200 — a 35 per cent cut, with no change to the itinerary.

Move your dates two weeks. Late April, early June, September and early November give you the calmest sea of the year, the best visibility and shoulder-season airfares. The month-by-month picture is in our sea and crowd table.

Do not compress the trip. Trying to save a hotel night by flying in on departure morning is the most common false economy in Labuan Bajo. Boats leave the harbour between 09:30 and 10:30; the first Bali flight rarely puts you at the pier before 09:00 with any margin. Missing the boat costs far more than the room.

What 3D2N buys you that 2D1N does not

The extra night is what makes Padar at sunrise possible, because the boat repositions overnight while you sleep. It also gives the captain a spare half-day to work around wind, which is why 3D2N trips are cancelled far less often than tight two-day formats. On the Lamborajo card the step from 2D1N to 3D2N costs USD 300 on boat I and USD 750 on boat II — spread across a full group, that is USD 15 to USD 38 a head for an entire additional day at sea.
