What Can I Do in Labuan Bajo Besides the Boat Trip?

Beyond the boat, Labuan Bajo has a genuine land half-day economy that almost nobody uses: Rangko Cave’s saltwater pool about an hour north-west, Cunca Wulang canyon an hour or so inland, the Melo highland villages 45 to 60 minutes up the ridge, Batu Cermin cave 15 minutes from town, and the harbour viewpoints at Sylvia Hill and Bukit Cinta.
The pattern in Labuan Bajo is remarkably consistent. People fly in, sleep one night, sail for three days, and fly out. The whole of western Flores — karst hills, river canyons, Manggarai villages, hot springs, a coastline of empty bays — passes underneath the arriving aircraft and is never visited. If you have a spare day, or if weather has taken your boat, this is what is actually there.
What can I do in Labuan Bajo besides the boat trip?
| Place | One-way travel | Time needed | What it is | Best part of day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Batu Cermin cave | ~15 minutes | 1–2 hours | Limestone cave with a light shaft through the roof; guide required | Late morning, when the shaft lights |
| Sylvia Hill | ~10–20 minutes | 1 hour | Ridge viewpoint over the harbour and near islands | Sunset |
| Bukit Cinta | ~15–25 minutes | 1 hour | Grass hill viewpoint, wider panorama than Sylvia | Sunset |
| Rangko Cave | ~1 hour road, then a short boat | Half day | Saltwater cave pool you can swim in | Midday, when light enters the water |
| Cunca Wulang canyon | ~1–1.5 hours | Full day | River canyon walk, cliff pools, swimming | Morning start |
| Melo village and the highlands | ~45–60 minutes | Half day | Manggarai village, caci dance by prior arrangement, ridge views | Late afternoon |
| Kampung Ujung night market | Walking distance in town | 1–2 hours | Waterfront grilled-fish market, sold by weight | From dusk |
| Cunca Rami waterfall | ~1.5–2 hours | Full day | Forest waterfall, longer walk in, far fewer visitors | Morning start |
Road times are approximate and shift with rain and road works — the inland routes climb quickly and surfaces vary. Several of these sites charge a small local entrance ticket set at village or district level. We deliberately do not publish those figures: they are revised without notice and every number circulating online is out of date. Confirm at the gate.
The three that are actually worth a day
Rangko Cave
A collapsed limestone chamber holding a pool of clear seawater, reached by road to a small fishing settlement and then a short boat transfer. The appeal is specific and time-dependent: around the middle of the day, light comes through the opening and turns the pool a hard turquoise. Arrive at eight in the morning and you get a dark hole. This is a swim, not a sightseeing stop — bring a towel and expect to get in.
Cunca Wulang
A river canyon inland, walked from a trailhead through farmland and then down into the gorge. There is scrambling on wet rock, and the reward is a series of pools between cliff walls that you swim and, if you want to, jump into. It is the most physical thing on this list and the one that most changes your idea of what Flores is — the boat trip is entirely coastal, and the interior looks nothing like it.
Melo and the highlands
Twenty minutes above the coast the temperature drops and the landscape turns to terraced ridges. Melo is the accessible Manggarai village, known for caci — the whip-and-shield ritual dance — which is performed for visitors by prior arrangement rather than on a fixed schedule. Do not turn up expecting a show. Arrange it through your hotel or operator with notice, and treat it as a visit to a working village.
In town itself
Labuan Bajo’s town core is a single road along the water plus the slope above it, and an evening covers it. Batu Cermin cave sits fifteen minutes inland and takes an hour or two with a guide, who will carry a lamp and show you the fossil marine remains in the limestone — the hills here were reef, which is a fair primer for a trip that is about to be spent above coral.
Sunset belongs to the hills. Sylvia Hill is the closest and busiest; Bukit Cinta is a slightly longer drive with a wider view. Both look west over the near islands, which is the postcard that appears on every Labuan Bajo article ever written. Dinner is the Kampung Ujung waterfront market: fish chosen from ice, weighed, grilled and eaten at plastic tables by the sea. Our town guide covers the in-town options with distances and a realistic one-day plan.
What to do if weather cancels your boat
December to March is when this happens. If a departure is called off, the land list above becomes your itinerary rather than your bonus — and the good news is that the inland options are largely unaffected by the sea state that cancelled your sailing. Cunca Wulang in light rain is fine, sometimes better. Rangko needs a short boat hop, so it can be affected. Batu Cermin and the highlands are all-weather.
Keep in mind that a cancelled departure is usually rescheduled rather than refunded, so ask your operator about the next available slot before you rebook flights. Which months carry the real risk is set out in our month-by-month sea and crowd table.
Getting around
Distances are short but public transport is thin. In town, ride-hail motorbikes and short taxi hops cover everything. For the inland sites you want a car with a driver for the day, arranged through your hotel or operator, because the trailheads are not places you want to be stranded at. Scooters are widely rented and are fine for Sylvia Hill and Batu Cermin; they are a poor idea for the highland roads if you are not an experienced rider on broken surfaces.
