Yes. Boats board from around 09:00 and leave between 09:30 and 10:30, so a night in Labuan Bajo removes the only genuinely unrecoverable risk in the whole itinerary — a delayed flight against a departure that cannot wait. One hotel night costs between IDR 250,000 and IDR 4,000,000 depending on where you stay. Missing the boat costs the trip.

Almost every experienced traveller in Flores gives the same advice, and almost every first-time visitor tries to skip it anyway, because the flight schedule looks like it fits. On paper it does. In practice the margin is between zero and sixty minutes, and it is spent by anything from a late inbound aircraft to a slow baggage belt.

Should I stay a night in Labuan Bajo before the boat trip?

Stay the night if any of the following is true — which, for most people, is all of them:

  • you have checked baggage;
  • you are travelling with children, or with anyone who does not move quickly through an airport;
  • your flight is not the first departure of the day out of Denpasar or Jakarta;
  • you are on a scheduled open trip rather than a private charter;
  • you are travelling in December, January or February, when weather delays cluster;
  • you want to be rested for a 04:30 wake-up on the Padar morning.

The only case where boarding on arrival day is genuinely comfortable is a private charter, where the departure is yours to move. That reasoning is worked through in detail in can I do Komodo in two days on a morning flight.

What one night actually costs

Accommodation in Labuan Bajo spans an unusually wide band for a town this size, because it serves both backpackers on the harbour road and guests heading to hillside resorts.

Labuan Bajo accommodation bands, one night, 2026 market observation
TypeTypical band per nightWhereDistance to the pier
Hostel dorm bedIDR 150,000–300,000Harbour road and side streetsWalking distance
Simple guesthouse roomIDR 250,000–600,000Town centre5–10 minutes on foot
Mid-range hotelIDR 600,000–1,500,000Town and lower slopes5–10 minutes by road
Upper-mid hotel with a viewIDR 1,500,000–3,000,000Hillside above the bay10–20 minutes by road
Resort, out of townIDR 3,000,000 and upCoastal, north or south of town20–45 minutes by road

Bands are 2026 market observations for a standard night and move sharply in July, August and the Christmas–New Year window; confirm current rates directly with the property. The important variable is not price but road time. If you are boarding at 09:30, a resort forty-five minutes away means leaving at 08:15 with luggage, which reintroduces exactly the stress you paid to avoid. For the night before boarding, choose proximity over view. Save the view for after the boat.

What to do with the evening

You do not need to fill it, but it is a pleasant one if you want to. Sylvia Hill and Bukit Cinta give the harbour sunset over the near islands, ten to twenty minutes by road. The Kampung Ujung waterfront night market is the standard dinner — grilled fish chosen from ice, sold by weight, eaten at plastic tables by the water. Batu Cermin cave sits fifteen minutes inland and takes an hour or two, though it is better as a morning stop than an evening one. Our Labuan Bajo town guide covers all three with distances.

The practical evening list matters more: draw cash, because there is no ATM once you leave the harbour and park and ranger charges are settled in rupiah. Buy motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it — they work taken before boarding, not after symptoms start. Charge everything. Repack so that what you need on deck is at the top, since cabins on any boat are compact.

Should you also stay a night after the boat?

Usually not necessary. Boats return to the pier between 11:00 and 13:00 on the final day, which makes an afternoon or early-evening flight comfortable. A 14:00 departure is tight; from 16:00 onward is relaxed. If your onward flight is the following morning, one more night in town is easier than a dawn transfer, but that is convenience rather than risk management. Full return windows are on our 3D2N departure and inclusions page.

The short version

One night before boarding converts the riskiest part of your itinerary into a non-event. It is the cheapest insurance available on a Komodo trip — less than the cost of one person’s park fees at the lower end of the market, against the loss of a boat that has already sailed.

Should I stay a night in Labuan Bajo before the boat trip?
Yes. Boats board from 09:00 and leave between 09:30 and 10:30, and no scheduled departure waits for a delayed flight. A night in town removes the only unrecoverable risk in the itinerary, and lets you start the trip rested.
Where should I stay the night before a Komodo boat trip?
Within ten minutes of the harbour. Town-centre guesthouses and hotels run roughly IDR 250,000 to IDR 1,500,000. Hillside resorts are lovely but sit twenty to forty-five minutes away by road, which reintroduces the morning stress you are trying to avoid.
Is Labuan Bajo town worth an extra day?
The town itself takes an evening. What is worth an extra day is the area around it — Rangko Cave, Cunca Wulang canyon and the Melo highlands are all within an hour or so by road and see a fraction of the boat-trip crowd.
Do I need cash before boarding?
Yes. Park entrance, ranger and local retribution charges are cash transactions in rupiah, and there is no ATM once you leave the harbour. Draw what you need in town the evening before you sail.
What time should I be at the pier?
Between 09:00 and 09:30 for a standard 3D2N. Check-in covers the passenger manifest, park-fee settlement and getting luggage aboard, which takes twenty to thirty minutes for a full group.
Can the boat wait for me if I am late?
On a scheduled open trip, no — other passengers and the tide set the departure. On a private charter, yes, within the day, though holding past about 11:30 begins to cut the first stops from the itinerary.

Accommodation bands are 2026 market observations, not quoted rates, and rise in peak periods — confirm with the property. Boarding and return windows are the standard operating pattern and shift with weather and tide. Further reading: which airlines fly to Labuan Bajo.
